Building Your Business by Knowing your Priorities and Values

Having a clear idea of who you are (your values) and what is important to you (your priorities) will help you create a successful and profitable business. If you try to build a successful business that is not in line with your values and priorities, it’s really hard, in the end your either going to fail or succeed and be miserable. It is so much easier to be successful and happy when your actions match up with your priorities and values.

When your business is in sync with your values, you are invigorated. Actions for business success feel easy to do. You feel inspired. For example, if one of your values is helping others and in your business you solve a client’s problem, you feel good, really good! Working with that client is easy, exciting and fun. Your values energize every action connect with it.

When you take consistent actions that mesh with your values you find that opportunities, clients and income come to you.

One of my values is creativity. When I have the opportunity to be creative while working with my clients I am energized and my clients get better results out of coaching with me. When my clients get fabulous results, they rave about me. When they rave about me, I get more clients. When I get more clients, I make more income and build my business. All this from one action taken on one value, clarity can be priceless!

Knowing your values is important:

  • Identifying your values helps make you effective.
  • You use your values to make every decision.
  • Values and priorities dictate how you spend your day.
  • It puts you in control of your life.

Values give you clarity and focus. Identifying your values, and then prioritizing them makes sure you get results in the areas of your life and business that are important to you, and that the two interconnect well.

We have talked a lot about values, now let’s look at Priorities.

Once you have identified your values, you need to prioritize them. Let’s look at the values family, success and creativity. Below are two prioritized value lists. How different would the business and life be of the entrepreneurs who would have created each list?

Entrepreneur 1

  • Family
  • Creativity
  • Success

Entrepreneur 2

  • Success
  • Creativity
  • Family

One entrepreneur would be super career oriented, the other concentrating more on their family. If the entrepreneur whose top priority was family built a business that called for a 60 hour work week would they be happy? Probably not. That business would not be in step with the entrepreneur’s values and priorities.

To be successful without struggling and to be happy with what you create, you must take consistent action that is aligned with your values and priorities.

Values ÷ Priorities = Business success and happiness with greater ease.
