  Create a Successful Business by Identifying your Values and Priorities
  By Jennifer Davey

Your values are who you are and the ideas you represent, and your priorities are the things that are most important to you. Being able to identify what these are for your business will help you be profitable and successful. Trying to build a business that does not take your values and priorities into account will end up making you miserable in the long run. It’s much easier to achieve success if you build on a solid foundation.

Working on a business that is aligned with your values is a rewarding experience, in more ways than one. The actions you need to take for success feel easy, and you feel inspired every day. For instance, if you value helping others, every time you solve a problem you’re going to feel great and energized. Success becomes easier to achieve.

Consistently taking actions that are based on solid values pays off in the long run. Clients, opportunities, and income will find their way to you.

Personally, creativity is among my values. Every time I am able to bring my creativity into my coaching business, I feel great, which means that my clients get better results from working with me. This creates a positive chain effect: When my clients get great results, they spread the word, and I end up with more clients, which builds my business. All of this is the result of simply acting based on a value.

Other reasons why it’s important to identify your values:

* It makes you focused and more effective in reaching your goals.
* It gives you a basis on which to make decisions.
* It guides you in how you should go about your everyday work.
* It gives you a feeling of control over your life and work.

In other words, knowing what your values are will give you clarity, and it will allow you to focus on the important work at hand. It also gives you a chance to prioritize the things that are important to you and to make sure that your life and business feed each other in positive ways.

That’s what values can do for you. But what about priorities?

Priorities are basically values that you place at a high level of importance. For an example of priorities, let’s look at success, creativity, and family. Look at the two prioritized lists of values below. Would you expect these two entrepreneurs to have different lives and business results?

Entrepreneur A

* Success
* Creativity
* Family

Entrepreneur B

* Family
* Creativity
* Success

One of these entrepreneurs would be extremely career-oriented, while the other would tend to focus more on his or her home life. Do you think the entrepreneur whose family is the top priority would be happy working 60 hours per week? I’m guessing no. Thus, a business that requires that person to work that much would not mesh with his or her values.

In the end, if you want to be both successful and happy with your business, all of your actions must be rooted in solid values, with your priorities always in mind.

When values underlie action, business success becomes much more attainable.
