While there are hundreds of tactics you could use to promote your local business on Twitter. Here are a few of my favorites.
Gather Local Followers
- Use Twitters search function to find Twitter users in a mile range of a specific area. Just go to
http://search.twitter.com/
And enter your area in this format:
near:Philadelphia within:50mi
- Use TwellowHood’s directory. Just click on the map and drill down. This is very cool because you can see, visually, how many Twitter users are in a given area.

- Use Twitter Search to search for users who are searching for you! For example, if you are a restaurant, you could search “restaurant Philadelphia” and find Twitter users searching for restaurants in Philadelphia. Then follow those users. They will most likely follow you back.
Promote Your Business
- Tweet events, specials, discounts and coupons for your local followers. Many people have their tweets going to their phone (text).
- Tweet limited time offers and discounts, such as “Come in and order a drink in the next two hours and get a discount”.
- Ask your followers to Retweet (forward) coupons to other users to get a discount.
Two great examples of local businesses doing a bang up job of local Twittering are the Luxor in Las Vegas and The Coffee Groundz in Houston Texas.
The Luxor in Las Vegas offers hotel discounts and entertainment tickets.

CoffeeGroundz takes To Go orders via direct message and uses their tweets to inform their clients about events and promotions.
